How Sleep Apnoea can affect drivers

Did you catch the Trust Me I am Doctor program recently on BBC2, which highlighted the issues of obstructive sleep apnoea that causes around 40,000 accidents per year?

Sleep Apnoea

Trust Me I am Doctor was a great program last night on BBC2 which highlighted the issues of obstructive sleep apnoea that causes around 40,000 accidents per year. Many HGV drivers suffer from sleepiness and are afraid to take action as they could lose their licence on notification. Working with the Occupational Sleep Apnoea Partnership Group, the RHA helped to make a change with the DVSA Medical Standards on fitness to drive in 2017. Protecting drivers who come forward with a sleep problem, they will no longer be immediately banned from driving and will have time to get a proper diagnoses. We are now lobbying for those diagnosed to be treated within four weeks. “The Four Week Wait” treatment is very simple and easy to administer with a CPAP device that in most cases completely cures the driver. If you suffer with daytime sleepiness take action now – do not delay get medical advice.
