Looking Ahead to 2026: What We Expect for the Commercial Driving Industry

See what’s coming for the commercial driving industry in 2026. From new tech to driver demand & other changes expected to shape the year ahead, we cover it all.

The commercial driving industry has no plans to slow down in 2026.

New technology is making its way into fleets, workforce pressures continue to crop up, and we may see updates to the rules of the road. And that’s only some of what’s on the horizon for the year ahead.

As we prepare for the next 12 months, we’ve mapped out the things most likely to shape them. These are the areas where we’re already seeing change, the topics we’re likely to hear much more about in the coming year, and what they might mean for you and your career.

Key professional driving sector predictions for 2026

Here are the main changes we think are worth keeping an eye on in 2026.

AI advancements for transport industry

AI is a hot topic in just about every industry, commercial driving included. In fact, we’re expecting more fleets and transportation companies to start experimenting with AI tools in 2026.

Drivers and operators will gradually see more of this tech working its way into everyday jobs. Think route planning, monitoring driving patterns, and helping operators spot issues and nip them in the bud before any real damage is done.

And just to be clear, AI isn’t replacing drivers. It’s more of an extra set of eyes that helps keep things ticking over.

Regional skills shortage

Even with overall driver numbers looking steady, the shortage will still impact certain regions, especially during busy periods.

There are plenty of people with new passes ready to work, but many still find it hard to land that first opportunity. Access to Driver CPC training is helping prepare more professional drivers, but without real-world experience many still struggle to get started.

If the industry wants to avoid slipping back into another shortage, employers will need to be willing to give new HGV licence holders a start. A bit of support, some mentoring, and a more open mindset can all help.

More focus on keeping good drivers

Recruiting drivers is one thing, but keeping them on board is becoming just as important. With rising costs and shifting workloads, we expect more companies to take a closer look at how they support and retain their drivers in 2026.

Many drivers invest significant time and money into passing their practical tests and securing their commercial driving licence. Making sure they feel supported once they enter the workforce is crucial.

That could mean improving communication, offering more consistent shifts, planning more clearly, or simply making sure drivers feel valued and heard. Even small changes can help employers avoid the constant cycle of replacing staff.

Rising number of electric HGVs

These vehicles are still at the early-adoption stage for most companies, but interest is definitely growing as infrastructure slowly improves. With fuel prices remaining unpredictable, many transportation companies are exploring electric options as a way to stabilise long-term operating costs.

The shift won’t be quick or simple (the costs and charging challenges on UK roads aren’t going away anytime soon), but we expect to see a bit more progress in 2026.

Changes to rules and safety standards in the transportation industry

While nothing has been confirmed yet, we’ve been hearing plenty of discussion around areas like road safety, bridge strikes, and tightening up emissions standards.

These are issues that come up time and again, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see new guidance or requirements being put forward in the next 12 months.

For drivers and operators, this mostly means keeping an eye on announcements and being ready to adapt if needed. Staying informed will be important as the year unfolds, as these changes can affect training, planning, or day-to-day operations.

What Driver Require has planned for 2026

Our plans for 2026 are straightforward: continue supporting drivers and helping employers build the teams they need.

Here’s how we’ll do that:

Sticking to our role as the driver champion

We’ll carry on speaking up for drivers, raising the issues they deal with every day, and pushing for fair treatment across the industry.

Sharing more insight and practical guidance

Drivers and employers can both expect more data-led content, reports, and useful resources to help them understand what’s happening in the industry (and what it means for them!).

Working closely with industry partners

We plan to keep standards high and share what’s really happening on the ground, continuing our partnerships with groups like the RHA and the REC.

Pushing for wider acceptance of new passes

This is one of our biggest priorities. We’ll be encouraging clients to take on newly-qualified drivers, supporting mentoring schemes, and helping bridge the experience gap so we can build a stronger, more sustainable workforce for the future.
