CPC Training Explained! What Every Aspiring Commercial Driver Needs to Know

Want to be a professional CPC driver? This guide explains what CPC training is, why it’s so important, how much it costs, how to get started, and much more.

Commercial driving is a steady, rewarding career. Driving lorries, making deliveries, or transporting passengers…whatever route you take, it’s a job that keeps you moving, and the industry is eager to hire new drivers.

But before you can jump into the driver’s seat and hit the road, there’s one step you can’t skip: getting your CPC.

If you’re not familiar with the CPC (officially known as the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) this guide is here to help. We’ll walk you through what CPC training includes, why it’s important, what it costs, and key things to keep in mind before you get started.

Which drivers need CPC cards

In the UK (and across the EU), CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) cards are required for most professional drivers of large goods vehicles (LGVs) and passenger-carrying vehicles (PCVs).

Drivers who need a CPC card:

✅ LGV/HGV Drivers (Lorry drivers)

  • Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes used for commercial purposes

  • Examples: HGV Class 1 (C+E), Class 2 (C), and 7.5-tonne drivers

✅ PCV Drivers (Bus and coach drivers)

  • Vehicles with more than 8 passenger seats, used for commercial purposes

  • Examples: Minibus, bus, or coach drivers operating on a hire-and-reward basis

Drivers who do not need a CPC card (exemptions):

You do not need a CPC card if you’re driving:

  • For personal use only (e.g. moving house with a hired lorry)

  • Under 100km and not your main job (e.g. mechanics moving vehicles for repair)

  • To or from a pre-booked test (CPC not required until after passing)

  • In emergencies or rescue situations

  • Agricultural, forestry, farming vehicles within a limited range

  • Military, police, or fire service vehicles

What is driver CPC training?

If you want to drive professionally in the UK or EU, you’ll need to get your CPC first. Obtaining this certification means undergoing training where you learn the essential skills, safety controls, and regulations needed to drive commercial vehicles, including:

  • Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV)

  • Large Goods Vehicles (LGV)

  • Passenger transport vehicles (like buses or coaches)

Important: CPC is not optional for professional driving. It’s a mandatory qualification under both UK and EU law. Not only do new drivers have to complete the initial CPC qualification, all professional drivers must complete refresher training every five years to stay qualified.

Initial CPC qualification for new drivers

If you’re just starting out as a professional driver, the first step is to complete training for the initial CPC qualification. This training is made up of four modules, each playing an important part in ensuring you’re able to drive commercial vehicles safely and efficiently.

  • Module 1: Pass a theory test covering road rules and safe driving practices. (Although you can prepare for this test through online training at home, the actual test must be taken in person at an official test centre).

  • Module 2: Complete another computer-based test using scenario-based questions to assess how you’d apply your knowledge in real-life situations. For example, responding to hazards, following regulations, and managing rest breaks.
Module 3: Take a practical driving test to show you can handle the vehicle safely on the road. You’ll be evaluated on manoeuvring, hazard awareness, adherence to traffic laws, and more.

  • Module 4 (For goods vehicle drivers): Complete a hands-on assessment to demonstrate your ability to carry out essential safety tasks, like loading and unloading goods and safely securing cargo.

Once you’ve completed all four modules, you’ll receive your CPC qualification certificate. This officially allows you to work as a professional driver in the UK or EU. From there, you’ll need to keep your skills up-to-date through regular refresher training to stay legally compliant.

Periodic driver CPC training

Getting your initial CPC qualification is a great achievement, allowing you to officially start an exciting career as a professional driver. But throughout your career, you’re required to keep your skills sharp by completing 35 hours of periodic training every five years.

Why? Because rules change, technology improves, and what’s considered best practice today might not be the same in a few years.

If you skip or miss this periodic training, your CPC will expire. And without a valid CPC, you can’t legally drive for commercial purposes.

How much does CPC training cost?

There’s no fixed price tag for CPC training. Costs can vary depending on the type of course you’re taking (initial or refresher) and the training provider you choose.

If you’re concerned about costs, there may be funding or financial support available. It’s always worth checking if you qualify for any grants or assistance, as this can make all the difference in how much your certification will cost you.

Where to get CPC training

Who you choose as your CPC instructor is a personal choice, but there are a few qualities we recommend looking for before making your decision.

  • Location and convenience: If you're attending in-person training, it’s best to choose an instructor close to home so you’re not stuck travelling long distances. Some providers also offer online courses for certain modules, which can save you time and stress.

  • Positive reviews for past students: What are others saying about the course? Good reviews are a strong sign of quality teaching and a well-run course. Look for comments about how useful, clear, and supportive the training was.

  • Course schedule and flexibility: It’s important to find a course that fits your availability. Some providers offer weekend or evening sessions, which may be a good fit for your lifestyle.

  • Materials and modules: Make sure the course actually delivers what’s needed for your specific situation (initial CPC or periodic training). It should follow Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) guidelines and include all required modules.

  • Support during and after training: A good instructor will support you through the entire process, helping with paperwork and test prep, or answering questions after your course ends.

  • Transparent pricing with no hidden fees: Processes can vary, but they should always be clear. A reputable training provider will tell you exactly what’s included in the cost and won’t spring unexpected charges on you later.

Common questions and misconceptions

There’s often confusion around CPC training, especially for new drivers. We’ve cleared up some of the most common questions and myths below.

Do all drivers need CPC training?

If you’re driving large goods vehicles professionally for hire or reward in the UK or EU, then yes, CPC training is a legal requirement. There are some exceptions (like driving for personal use or in certain emergency situations), but most commercial drivers will need it.

Can driver CPC courses be completed online?

Some CPC training can be done online, including parts of the periodic training. But any modules involving practical skills need to be done in person. Always check with the provider to see which parts of your training course are available online, and which aren't.

What happens if a qualified driver fails to complete their CPC refresher?

You won’t be able to legally drive professionally until your CPC is updated. Driving without a valid CPC can lead to fines and could put your job at risk.

What do you get when you pass your Driver CPC?

Once you’ve completed all the required modules and tests, you’ll be issued a Driver Qualification Card (DQC). This proves you’ve met the CPC requirements and are legally allowed to drive professionally in the UK and EU. You’ll need to carry your DQC with you whenever you’re working; driving without it can result in fines or penalties.
