Our 6 Top Tips for a Successful Driver Interview with Driver Require
Check out our top tips to help you prepare, show off your skills, and make a great impression!
Are you looking for your next career challenge? Want to shake things up a bit and try something new?
Applying for a job anywhere can be intimidating, no matter how seasoned you are. Maybe you get nervous in a job interview setting—or maybe it’s just been years since you’ve last done one! Either way, you know you have the skills for the job, but a little prep can go a long way in getting you the role you’re after.
Whether you're aiming to be a Driver Require truck driver or land a delivery driver role with us, we'll share a few simple steps to help you get ready, be confident, and nail your interview.
Buckle up! Let’s get started.
Know the job you’re applying for
It may seem obvious, but knowing exactly what the job’s all about can mean the difference between walking into your interview feeling confident, or feeling tense and unprepared.
Have a thorough read of the job description. Is it a part-time courier position? A long-haul lorry driver role? Whichever job you have your eye on, read through all the details on the application form so you can prepare for the interview questions as best you can.
Take some time to learn about us
As with any job interview, it’s important to learn about the company you’re applying to. In the days leading up to your interview, take some time to do your research, take some notes, and get a feel for who we are.
If something about our work culture, history, or style stands out to you, don’t be afraid to mention it. It shows initiative, interest, and that you already have some of the qualities needed to be a successful candidate!
Get your paperwork in order
You don’t want to go through all the effort of getting yourself ready, just to forget something important on the day. After checking out the company and job description, make sure to gather all the documents you’ll need.
For a Driver Require interview, these bring:
A clean, full driving licence
Your Driver Qualification Card (DQC)
Driver tachograph card
Any other qualifications you have—like HIAB training, ADR documentation, International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) training, MOFFETT forklift experience, or Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS)
Proof of your right to work in the UK—your passport or a biometric card
Proof of your National Insurance number (i.e., from a Tax Code notification or P45, P60, or P11D forms)
Proof of address—a utility bill, landline phone bill, or bank statement from the last 3 months (unfortunately, mobile bills don’t qualify)
You may also be asked to fill out a Night Health Questionnaire to make sure that you’re fit for night shifts
Previous employer references
If your interview is carried out remotely rather than in branch, you’ll be asked to hold up your right to work documentation and a screenshot will be taken of you. You’ll also be sent an Amiqus digital right to work form to fill out and be sent back to your potential employer.
Tip: Make sure any qualifications you’re bringing are all up to date!
Timing is everything
So, it’s the morning of your interview. You might be a little nervous and that’s ok! It shows you care about the job and want to make a good impression. What certainly won’t leave a good first impression is running late.
Being late not only shows a lack of respect for your employer’s time, but you’ll likely be more stressed from the get-go, getting the interview off to a bad start.
Aim to arrive a few minutes early. Plan your route to the branch ahead of time and take things like traffic or any other unexpected delays into account. That way, you have time to take a breather and gather your thoughts before you start, giving you the best chance at acing the interview.
Be ready to talk about yourself
Any interview questions we ask will help us get a better sense of who you are both as a person and as a worker.
You can expect a few common interview questions—the kind you’ve probably answered before: What kind of vehicles have you driven? Have you navigated bad weather on the road before? How are you with tight delivery deadlines?
Beyond that, there may be some role-specific and safety-related questions, too. These help us get to know you, your experience as a professional driver, and whether you’re a good fit for the job.
If you’re a seasoned driver, you’ll have learned important skills in your time that could make you an asset to the team. Don’t be afraid to share! Tell us about how you manage customer interactions, how you work with others, or your favourite part of the job.
Keep your answers clear and concise. This will help you stay focused and make sure your points come across smoothly.
Tip: Use the STAR method! Describe the Situation you faced, the Task you were given, the Action you took, and the Result of that action. It’s a great way to make sure your answers are detailed, clear, and focused.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions
Remember, an interview is a two-way street! Asking questions shows your potential employer that you're engaged and genuinely invested in the role.
Steer clear of asking questions that are answered in the job description or ones with simple yes or no answers. Instead, aim for thoughtful questions that show you're truly interested in the role and want to learn more.
Not sure what to ask? Here are a few questions to consider:
What does a typical shift look like for a driver in this role?
Does this role work on a regular schedule, or does it change from week to week?
What would you say is the most challenging part of this position?
What is your approach to work-life balance?
You’re ready to ace your interview
Now that you’re armed with these tips and tricks, you’ll be able to tackle any interview questions with ease. Just remember, it’s all about bringing your best self, showcasing what you bring to the table and the skills that make you a valuable addition to the team.
Keep calm, stay focused, and remember: we’re looking for someone just like you. Best of luck, we’re looking forward to meeting you!
