Beyond The Extra Mile

A driver puts the post code in to get to Muswell Hill A lorry load of paper cups from China on his bill The day was going well until, he opened up the door And most of what was wrapping, was lying on the floor

A sudden urge to raise his voice and shout ‘oh deary me’ Was stifled when he realised, that everyone could see The Costa staff just looked at him and went back to their shop And left him there to pick it up, (they did give him a mop)

So after packing up the load and stacking it 3 high The Barista declined to sign and wouldn’t tell him why So almost at the breaking point our man through gritted teeth Just smiled and put the load back on, and hid his stress beneath

Then on to sunny Ilford, were everyone talks funny And coffee cups are currency, a substitute for money So when he opens up the cab, he’s got to watch the crew And lock the doors behind him and hide anything that’s new

As far as he can notice, the drop is all in place He has to move the load before, it’s now taking the space The manager is on a break, he isn’t back ‘til 8 And by that time the next drop will tell him that he’s late

He’s only got another, fourteen drops to do And all within a hundred miles, and all in London too He phones the wife to tell her, she’s not a happy girl They’d booked to go to Prezzos and afterwards a twirl

So when he gets back to the yard, they’ve locked the gates and bar He has to call the owner, to let him get his car It’s cold and wet and low on fuel, the meter’s showing red He’s really gone the extra mile, he’d rather be in bed

Another day in paradise, our Driver on the Road One day he’ll tell them what to do, to shove the blinkin’ load Until that time he’ll hold his tongue and turn the other cheek ‘cos after all he loves the job, for just another week
